A generous donation of R50 000 and two state-of-the-art 3M Littmann Electronic Stethoscopes has been made by 3M South Africa’s Health Care division to the Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Foundation (WSPCF). The donations will be used to ensure that underprivileged children in Africa, who have congenital heart defects, will continue to receive life-saving treatment.
The WSPCF supports indigent cardiac children, and enables them to receive life saving heart correction at one of three hospitals in South Africa. The paediatric cardiac intensive care units are based at Netcare Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg, Netcare Christiaan Barnard and Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, both in Cape Town.
Since its establishment in 2003, the WSPCF has saved the lives of 472 babies and children from 24 African countries. Sponsorships like the one from 3M South Africa give hope to thousands of neonates, infants and children, as we are currently able to sponsor approximately 50 children in public sector and 50 children in the private sector. In addition to the cash donation, 3M South Africa also donated two state-of-the-art 3M Littmann Electronic Stethoscopes to the WSPCF, in order to assist local doctors in improving the detection and diagnosis of heart conditions among children.
